Acclaim Games Seeks to Fill 2 Positions – From Our Active Communities

Los Angeles (July 7, 2008) – Today, Acclaim Games' CEO, Howard Marks announced that he is seeking to employ new talent from within Acclaim's player community – specifically from the active players of 2Moons, 9Dragons and the player-designers of the Top Secret Project.

The two positions will involve coordination with developers and technical teams, working to improve Acclaim's games and respond to the needs of the players.

"We know that we have talented, passionate people in our community. They know our games and they understand what can be done to improve them," says Howard Marks. "That's why we always look to our players first, and that's why we are looking to hire from within the community."

To find the right people for the two open positions, Marks has devised a test, as follows:
  • Each applicant is to write two documents of 3 to 5 pages each. One of these documents is for 2Moons and the other is for Acclaim's new game Ponystars.
  • Each document must explain what the game lacks in content and features that would improve the players' experiences, based on the targeted audience for that game.
  • Each applicant should make specific recommendations for how to improve the games (2Moons and Ponystars) to satisfy, retain and increase the player base.
  • The job is located in Los Angeles, California. The winners will be required to locate in that area, no exceptions.
  • Acclaim will cover relocation costs (up to $3,000).
The application period will begin at 10pm on Monday, July 7, 2008 and end at midnight on Sunday, July 20, 2008.

All applications must be submitted to dp@acclaim.com by 12 midnight on Sunday, July 20, 2008. All times are Pacific Daylight Time.

Applications will be judged by David Perry, and the winning applicants will be notified and offered a full-time position at Acclaim in their Los Angeles offices.

"This is a great opportunity for our community members to show their skills," says David Perry. "I have always believed in the community, which is why I started the Top Secret Project. I have already hired several members of our communities. I see this as a way to continue a practice that has worked out very well."

Remember, submit applications to dp@acclaim.com by midnight on Sunday, July 20, 2008.

MMOG C++ Game Client Developer

Tue, 08 Jul 2008 18:05:51 GMT
MMOG C++ Game Client Developer
Location: Home office
Compensation: $72,000 - $84,000

= Opportunity Snapshot ===
This unique position offers you the opportunity not only to get in on the ground floor of a highly creative, privately funded MMOG company (we answer to no publishers or venture capitalists), but also to share in the profits. You'll work remotely, anywhere in the continental US, and yet still enjoy a highly collaborative process with other dedicated, experienced, and professionally mature people, leveraging advanced online technologies. The game client will be your "baby" and you'll play a key role in shaping the actual user experience. At Quest Online we hire only talented people, and then give them the resources and the "elbow room" to do their magic.

Focusing on the game client, you'll develop across a broad spectrum of areas including client game logic, rendering pipelines, network code, scripting system support, and user interface integration. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have demonstrated expertise in C++ and experience with DirectX, ideally DX9 or 10. You also will need to be an avid gamer yourself -- we're looking for a professional who wants to build the kind of game he or she loves to play. In addition, you'll need to be able to work independently, communicate clearly and easily with other team members, and enjoy producing quality results against deadlines.

Founded in 2006, Quest Online, LLC (QOL) is an Arizona-based game development company building the upcoming MMOG title Alganon. Designed from scratch and based in a uniquely created world, the initial goal in designing Alganon is to provide simple gameplay with unlimited growth in a massive world of immersion and interaction.

= What Else You'll Bring to the Table ===
In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
* Solid understanding of programming concepts including event and distributed programming.
* Extensive experience with graphics programming and complex algorithms.
* Experience with the implementation of game, UI, camera, rendering, FX, 3D object, particle systems, and online network programming.
* Experience with code optimization.
* Complex graphical programming experience including Shader programming experience (HLSL/GLSL).
* Expertise in 3D math, physics, and rendering.
* A methodical approach to programming.

Experience with the following is preferred but not required:
* Animation programming.
* LUA scripting/integration.
* Subversion, JIRA, and Confluence.
* MMOG development.

While the position is that of a contractor, it is currently defined as perpetual in term. We are scheduled to launch Alganon in 2009, and after launch we anticipate that you'll continue to grow and refine the game client. This is a remote position, however due to the importance of this position, we require the candidate to be located somewhere within the continental United States.

= What's in It for You ===
Ground floor opportunity -- QOL was founded because the two principals, who bring MMOG experience and solid track records as entrepreneurs, recognized that the gaming landscape offers too few quality games. Our business model is a private studio, properly managed and with the right talent, entering the market with a quality product that offers the best of existing MMOGs as well as new and unique features.

Great work environment -- yes, you'll work remotely, but we utilize the latest online technologies to promote a highly collaborative endeavor. Team members who have come from other gaming companies say they are amazed at the level of mutual respect within QOL. You'll interact and share insights with a highly talented team using JIRA project management software, Confluence enterprise wiki, Skype communications, and more.

Career development -- you'll keep your skills sharp, learning new technologies and also learning our systems. We developed all our technologies from scratch in order to keep our vision pure.

Excellent compensation -- in addition to earning a competitive salary, you will participate in a profit sharing program tied directly to the success of the game. While no one can predict the future, if our forecasts are correct you will be earning six figures in the first year after release, and even more after that.

= More About Your Role ===
If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details.

Reporting to the Director of Development (who is also one of QOL's founders), you will join a team of about 23, including Game, Web, and Database Developers; World Builders; and experts in music and sound effects. The entire team works virtually from around the country.

You will "inherit" the existing game client and invest the majority of your time adding features and further developing it. The original designer of the client is still on staff and can act as a resource to you. Your activities will fall into these key areas:
* Working with Game Designers to implement features on the game client.
* Working with the Server Development Team to implement network communication systems.
* Planning and managing the builds for the client, synchronized with the overall production version of the game content and database systems.
* Enhancing administrative and editing tools with features related to new game data.

= Keys to Success ===
This role involves much more than just programming; your experience with and passion for MMOGs will provide you the intuitive extra you need, such as understanding how shaders and terrain systems work. To excel in this role you will:
* Work hard and play hard, but also take care of yourself. You'll manage your own schedule and pace -- we're more concerned with quality results delivered to deadlines than with structured work hours. Of course, you'll need to be a little flexible in order to interact effectively with team members in several time zones.
* Learn a lot of new systems and technology fast, and then keep pace with a team that is already moving quickly.
* Maintain the discipline required to be effective in a virtual team structure.

= Who We Are ===
Alganon is a revolutionary fantasy-based MMORPG that allows thousands of people to play together in a virtual world that features multiple races, powerful weapons and armor, deadly magic, epic quests, ancient places to discover, the utilization of detailed tradeskills, and more.

We are creating a game that makes it easy for anyone to get started in and play, but also challenging enough that even the most skilled and hardcore gamer has the potential to grow beyond their expectations. In the Alganon world, the causal and hardcore gamer alike can adventure, grow, build, and share their accomplishments with other players.

For more information, please visit www.alganon.com and/or email your resume to resumes@qol.com

A three-tiered approach was taken to understanding chat communication interfaces in MMOs. First, a content analysis of chat communication was conducted utilizing Bales Interaction Process Analysis. Second, the chat communication interfaces of ten modern MMOs were evaluated. Lastly, a focus group of users was held to gauge their impressions of chat communication interfaces in MMOs. The result of this study is a set of heuristics that can be applied toward the design of future chat communication interfaces.

AGDC: Writing the Bioware Way on Slashdot

Quote:

BioWare titles are huge, from a writing standpoint. Most are in the neighborhood of some 500,000 words, with more than a million possible in some of their games. The work for those thousands of words is divided across the writing team in specific areas of responsibility, be it by chapter, planet, character, or plot. Each assigned writer then 'owns' that part of the game. The have a lot of control over what happens with that part of the story, and that ownership gives each member of the team a 'buy in' to the game ... as well as accountability. The lead writer and managing editor, meanwhile, are responsible for maintaining the consistency of the game's 'voice' across the entire project.
